Disgraceful scenes plagued the showdown between Real Betis and Sevilla on Saturday, ultimately culminating in the clash being abandoned.
Fekir cancels out Gomez
The latest edition of the Seville Derby was kicked into gear earlier this evening.
Amid stellar campaigns being enjoyed by both sides, Betis welcomed fierce rivals Sevilla to the Benito Villamarin, to vie it out for a spot in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.
And the opening 40 minutes of action in Andalusia certainly didn’t disappoint.
It was Sevilla who opened the game’s scoring just beyond the half-hour, when Papu Gomez latched onto a pull-back to the edge of the area to direct a pinpoint effort into the bottom corner of Rui Silva’s goal:

The visitors’ advantage didn’t last long, however, as Nabil Fekir levelled things up in spectacular fashion a short time later, bending home a stunning strike directly from a corner:

Jordan floored
As alluded to above, though, a wonderful night’s entertainment in the south of Spain was ultimately spoiled by one member of the home crowd.
As showcased in the footage below, amid the celebrations of Fekir’s equaliser, Sevilla’s Joan Jordan was struck by what appeared to be a metal bar, thrown from the Villamarin stands:

On the back of lengthy negotiations between the RFEF and officials from both Betis and Sevilla, it was ultimately decided that the fixture would not be allowed to continue, resulting in an abandonment a short time ago.
It now remains to be seen what kind of punishment awaits Betis, amid suggestions that the clash could be replayed behind closed doors over the coming weeks.
