Benzema surpasses Ronaldo after Real Madrid’s Super Cup win

Karim Benzema surpasses Ronaldo, but Barcelona legend remains on top after Real Madrid’s Super Cup win

Real Madrid star Karim Benzema etched his name ever further into the history books of the Spanish Super Cup this evening.

Modric amongst the goals

Carlo Ancelotti’s troops returned to action a short time ago.

After getting the better of Clasico rivals Barcelona to book their spot in the competition showpiece during the week, Los Blancos went head to head with Athletic Club, for the Supercopa de Espana title.

And, when all was said and done at the King Fahd Stadium, the fine campaign being enjoyed by the La Liga table-toppers only continued.

First, late in the first-half, Luka Modric rolled back the years courtesy of a superb finish from the edge of the area to put Real in front:

Then, on the other side of the interval, Karim Benzema put Ancelotti’s men out of sight, courtesy of a typically ruthless strike from 12 yards:

Despite Eder Militao’s late dismissal, Real, from here, held on to their two-goal advantage, to secure the 12th Super Cup in the club’s fabled history.

Benz climbs/Messi remains on top

As alluded to above, though, Los Merengues’ triumph this evening did not only prove significant from a collective perspective.

In addition, their 2nd of the clash, bagged by main man Karim Benzema, saw the Frenchman climb ever further up the list of top scorers in the history of the Supercopa de Espana.

Benzema, all told, has now found the net a total of five times in Super Cup action.

This figure stands as the 5th most in the history of the competition, and one more than the likes of Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez and ex-Blancos partner in crime Cristiano Ronaldo managed.

‘Benz’, however, remains some way adrift of the all-time leading Supercopa scorer, Lionel Messi, who, remarkably, managed 14 goals in the competition, twice as many as 2nd-placed Raul Gonzalez.
